"This piece is called “Duveltjeskermis”. The title is a reference to a flemish saying that describes the moment when it’s both sunny and rainy at the same time. It’s something my grandparents often say along with other words and sayings which are seldom remembered by people today. This phrase holds a vivid and visual value for me and It’s the first drawing and I made during the beginning of the lockdown. I was watching a lot of sci-fi and horror b-movies at the time, where the costumes are visibly less realistic than in high budget films. I was captivated by the idea of these ‘fake’ or ‘see through’ disguises. The setting is similar to theater plays where the decorations are simply a flat background with the actors playing in the foreground. That is also why the piece has a distinctly horizontal aesthetic.
This may be attributed to the idea of how everyone today is acting in a similar way - putting on masks and performing a show regarding their personal identity." - Xander Faes, 2020
